• NEW: Landfilling of biodegradable waste creates serious environmental problems. In the landfill body the biodegradable fraction decomposes and forms harmful for the environment compounds, such as methane (flammable and greenhouse gas). Therefore the European member states have adopted measures for reduction of biodegradable waste landfilling. Pursuant to Art. 5 of Directive 1999/31/ΕΡ for landfill of waste all member states have to develop national strategies for stepwise reduction of biodegradable fraction going to landfill. The ultimate goal is to landfill only 35% from the amount of biodegradable waste that has been landfilled in 1995.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Environment and Water have prepared Draft Strategy for reduction of municipal biodegradable waste going to landfill in Bulgaria. The statistical data used for its development is published in the Interim report. The implementation of the strategy requires the involvement of the entire society. You can send us your opinions, advice and commentaries on the Draft Strategy until 4 September 2006, to: evtimova@moew.government.bg .
